Welcome to Miền Bắc, the Northern Vietnam region, where Vietnamese culture originated over two millenia ago. It is the oldest of Vietnam’s three main regions and includes Hanoi, the nation’s capital and biggest city in the North. It is also home to the Hmong, Dao, and Vietnamese Thai people, who are N.A.M Decors’ biggest sources of handwoven fabrics.
We recently went to the mountainous Tây Bắc – Northwest Vietnam – to visit the native artisans that produce the handmade fabrics that we bring here to the UK. The locals were accommodating, as usual, showing us around their place, allowing us to take photos of them at work, and even posing for the camera during light moments.
Of course, the trip would not be complete without us acquiring some lovely items to share to the Western world, and we are happy to say that we have flown with us some choice fabrics to make cushions and throws, as well as dining essentials like placemats, table runners, and coasters. Some of them will even make it to our Heritage Collection, quality hand-crafted products that highlight the Vietnamese culture.
As can be expected in long journeys across the country, we saw a lot of captivating scenery, lots of foilage and beautiful flora, as well as ethnic people out and about. There are the stepped mountains, cultivated by the farming communities for planting. There are the stilted wooden huts, blending with the mountains, rivers and trees, like they are part of nature themselves. There are the ethnic Dao and Thai women, who continue to proudly wear their traditional headgear, despite some of them “moving on” to modern clothing. And there’s the rural sunset, a magnificent sight of an orange ball fading into the horizon, behind the majestic mountains and past the vast plain fields of this land of rich culture and captivating beauty.
This is the home of N.A.M.
